Nerve conduction study and EMG
Nerve conduction study (NCS) checks how well electrical signals travel through your nerves. Small electrical pulses are applied to the skin over a nerve. Sensors measure how quickly and strongly the nerve responds. It can help identify nerve damage, slowed nerve signals, or nerve compression. It can help detect compressed nerves such as in carpal tunnel syndrome or damaged peripheral nerves, such as in peripheral polyneuropathy.
Electromyography (EMG) checks the electrical activity inside your muscles and how the muscles respond to signals from the nerves. The results can help determine whether a problem originates in a muscle, a nerve, or the connection between them. It can help investigate muscle weakness, muscle wasting, certain nerve disorders, and problems involving nerve roots near the spine.
